To improve at TOPIK I reading, practise a few clear techniques: read the question before the text, find the topic from the ideas the sentences share, use the clues around a blank, and check every detail in the options. Beginner texts are short and about daily life, so the main challenges are accuracy and time, not difficult words. The examples below are original practice texts, not real test items.
What beginner reading texts look like
Beginner reading practice usually uses short everyday texts:
- signs and simple notices
- short advertisements and guides, such as information about a class or a shop
- text messages and short letters
- short passages about someone's day, family, hobby or plans
Most sentences use the polite -아요/어요 or the formal -ㅂ니다/습니다 endings. If both feel easy to read, you have a strong base.
Technique 1: Find the topic from shared ideas
Some questions ask what a short text is about. Look for the idea that connects the sentences, then choose the category word.
| Sentences | Topic |
|---|---|
| 저는 언니가 있어요. 언니는 회사원이에요. | 가족 (family) |
| 오늘은 비가 와요. 내일은 맑을 거예요. | 날씨 (weather) |
| 이 바지는 삼만 원이에요. 좀 비싸요. | 값 or 가격 (price) |
| 저는 주말에 수영을 해요. 테니스도 좋아해요. | 운동 (sport, exercise) |
The topic word is usually not written in the text. You have to see what the sentences have in common.
Technique 2: Use both sides of the blank
For fill-in-the-blank questions, read the words before and after the blank.
배가 고파요. 그래서 ( )에 가요.
Options: 식당, 은행, 우체국, 도서관
배가 고파요 (I'm hungry) and 그래서 (so) give you the reason. The place must be connected to food, so the answer is 식당 (restaurant).
Connecting words are common in blanks. Learn what each one signals.
| Word | Meaning | What follows |
|---|---|---|
| 그래서 | So | A result |
| 그리고 | And | More information |
| 하지만 / 그렇지만 | But | The opposite idea |
| 그런데 | But, by the way | A contrast or a new topic |
Example: 한국어는 어려워요. ( ) 재미있어요. → 하지만 (Korean is difficult. But it is fun.)
Technique 3: Read notices like a table
Notices and ads put information in short lines. Treat each line as a box in a table.
한국어 교실
시간: 매주 토요일 오전 10시~12시
장소: 시민회관 3층
수업료: 무료
Meaning: Korean class. Time: every Saturday, 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Place: civic centre, 3rd floor. Fee: free.
Which sentence matches the notice?
- a. 일요일에 수업이 있어요.
- b. 수업료를 내야 해요.
- c. 수업은 두 시간 동안 해요.
- d. 수업은 1층에서 해요.
| Option | Check |
|---|---|
| a | Wrong: the class is on 토요일 (Saturday). |
| b | Wrong: 무료 means free, so you do not pay. |
| c | Right: 10시~12시 is two hours. |
| d | Wrong: the class is on the 3rd floor (3층). |
The right answer needed a small calculation. Each wrong answer changed one detail. For a full step-by-step method, see finding the answer in a short passage.
Technique 4: Know common paraphrases
Correct options often say the same thing in different words.
| In the text | In the option | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 무료 | 돈을 안 내요 | Free / you don't pay |
| 매주 토요일 | 토요일마다 | Every Saturday |
| 혼자 살아요 | 가족과 같이 살지 않아요 | Lives alone / does not live with family |
| 비가 와서 | 날씨 때문에 | Because of the rain / because of the weather |
Also watch for changes in time and person:
- -고 싶어요 (want to) is a wish, not something already done.
- 갔어요 (went) and 갈 거예요 (will go) are different times.
- 저 (I) and 친구 (my friend) are different people. Check who does the action.
Technique 5: Main ideas and sentence order
For a main idea question, look closely at the last one or two sentences. Writers often put their opinion or advice there, using endings like -아/어야 해요 (have to), -는 것이 좋아요 (it is good to) or -고 싶어요 (want to).
If you see a sentence-order question, look at the first word of each sentence. A sentence that starts with 그래서, 그런데, 그리고 or 그 (that) is usually not the first sentence, because it connects to something before it.
Build speed without rushing
- Read one short Korean text every day, even for five minutes.
- Once you know the techniques, do practice sets with a timer. Managing time in timed practice has practical tips.
- If one question takes too long, choose your best answer and move on. Come back to it at the end if you have time.
Mini self-check
저는 일요일마다 공원에서 자전거를 탑니다. 그런데 오늘은 비가 와서 집에서 영화를 봤습니다.
- 오늘 이 사람은 무엇을 했습니까? (What did this person do today?)
- True or false: 이 사람은 오늘 공원에 갔습니다.
Answers: 1. Watched a movie at home (집에서 영화를 봤습니다). 자전거 (bicycle) is a trap: that is what the person usually does on Sundays. 2. False. It rained, so the person stayed home.
