To improve at TOPIK I listening, read the options before the audio, predict what you will hear, and listen for the one or two words that answer the question. Beginner listening uses short everyday conversations, so you do not need to understand every word. You need to catch the right detail. The dialogues below are original practice examples, not real test audio.

What beginner listening sounds like

Beginner listening practice usually uses short conversations between two people, often a man (남자) and a woman (여자), about daily life: shopping, plans, places, weather and asking for help. Common question types ask you to:

  • choose a natural reply
  • find where the speakers are
  • find the topic of the conversation
  • find what someone will do next
  • choose the sentence that matches the conversation

Technique 1: Read the options first and predict

The options tell you what kind of information you need. If the options are places, listen for place clues.

Place Clue words
병원 (hospital) 의사 (doctor), 아프다 (to hurt), 열이 나다 (to have a fever)
약국 (pharmacy) 약 (medicine), 하루에 세 번 (three times a day)
식당 (restaurant) 메뉴 (menu), 주문 (order), 맛있다 (to be delicious)
서점 (bookshop) 책 (book), 사전 (dictionary)
미용실 (hair salon) 머리 (hair), 자르다 (to cut)

The place name itself is often not said. You hear the clues and decide.

Technique 2: Choose a natural reply

Listen carefully to the question the speaker asks.

  • If it is a yes-or-no question, the reply often starts with 네 or 아니요.
  • If you hear a question word (뭐, 어디, 언제, 누구, 몇, 왜, 어떻게), the reply gives that information. It does not start with a simple 네 or 아니요.
You hear Natural reply Not natural
(Where are you going?)
(Would you like some coffee?)
(When did you come to Korea?)

Set phrases also have set replies.

You hear Natural reply
(said by the person leaving) 안녕히 가세요.

Technique 3: Listen for what happens next

For "What will the woman do next?", the answer is usually in the last line. Listen for -(으)ㄹ게요 (I will), -(으)ㄹ 거예요 (going to), -(으)러 가요 (go to do) and 그럼 (then).

Meaning: Woman: I'd like to borrow this book. Man: Someone else has borrowed that book. Please come again next week. Woman: Then I'll come back next week.

What will the woman do? She will come back next week. She cannot borrow the book today.

Technique 4: Check who did what

In matching questions, the wrong options often swap the man and the woman.

Which sentence matches the conversation?

The answer is b. The man went to the mountains with a friend, so he met a friend. Options a and c swap the two people. Option d is not said.

A home practice routine

  1. Listen once without text. Answer the question.
  2. Listen again. Check your answer and note what you missed.
  3. Read the script. Find the exact words that gave the answer.
  4. Shadow. Repeat each line out loud after the speaker.

In our practice sets, start in learning mode, where you can replay each clip. When you feel ready, move to timed mode. Use headphones and check the sound before you start. For a full dialogue routine, see how to practise short Korean dialogues, and read common beginner listening mistakes to avoid losing easy points.

Mini self-check

  1. You hear 어디가 아파요? Which is a natural reply: 네, 아파요 or 머리가 아파요?
  2. You hear 약 and 하루에 세 번. Where are the speakers most likely to be?
  3. The last line is 그럼 내일 다시 올게요. What will the speaker do?

Answers: 1. 머리가 아파요 (My head hurts), because 어디 is a question word. 2. A pharmacy (약국). 3. Come back tomorrow.
